Duck Action

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you just can't say no to a friend? That's what happened to me last week when my buddy Anthony asked if I could help him out by babysitting his three ducks and 18 chicken babies for a week. Now, I'm no farmer, but how hard could it be, right?

Well, let me tell you, it was an adventure from start to finish.

The first thing I learned is that ducks are wet creatures. Like, really wet. They waddle around like they're drunk, and practically try to bathe in the little water thingy— I finally gave up and gave them swim time in my bathtub today which is super cool- to watch them dive and swim. .

The chicken babies, were cute as can be. They were so small and fluffy, and they followed me around like I was their mom. It was adorable, until I realized that they had a tendency to poop everywhere. I mean, everywhere. I'm pretty sure I stepped in chicken poop at least three times a day. Plus did you know baby chicks can get pasty butt? It’s poop clogging their vent and you have to hand wash it gently to dislodge it— and since it’s still so flipping cold- I dried them with my Dyson. I’m not sure they enjoyed that part— but they look fluffy and cute again…

Ducks are surprisingly loud for such small creatures, and they would start quacking at the crack of dawn every morning. It was like having my own personal alarm clock, except it never turned off.

But you know what? Despite all the craziness, I actually had a lot of fun taking care of those little guys. It was a nice change of pace from my usual routine, and it felt good to help out a friend. The only problem is Grayson is not absolutely convinced that we need chickens and ducks… but we live so close to predators including our cat that loves to kill winged creatures I am not sure how we’ll manage it.
